Does your work reflect, reimagine, highlight +/or commemorate your neighborhood ?

Free Street Theater is looking for multimedia artists, writers, poets, musicians, storytellers, hood historians + performers to be a part of our pedestrian exhibit across the neighborhoods of Englewood, Back of the Yards, Gage Park, Brighton Park + McKinley Park. Artist submissions can range from the most traditional to the most conceptual, abstract, or experimental of any media addressing this theme. Proposals for short form oral history interviews will also be considered and supported.

This project is an expansion of Free Street Theater’s Cultural Asset Map Project funded by Chicago DCASE + The League of Chicago Theatres. CAM is a digital map + database that highlights all individuals, organizations, events, and spaces of artistic + cultural relevance in the neighborhoods covered by this map.

REQUIREMENTS : Must currently live in or have historic/familial ties to one of the participating neighborhoods. This exhibit is centering the experiences + practices of BIPOC community members.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES : Please submit 1-5 images of or links to preexisting artworks with the following details for each piece: TITLE, MEDIUM, SIZE IN INCHES, DATE COMPLETED, SOCIAL MEDIA OR WEBSITE. In addition, please provide a brief statement or bio (2-5 sentences total). For oral history proposals, include the name of an individual you would like to interview, 2-5 sentences on the topic you plan to cover, and whether you require technical support from Free Street Theater to complete this work.

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT : Sunday, September 20

COMPENSATION : $75 for each accepted piece (maximum of 5 pieces per artist will be accepted)

IMAGE USE/COPYRIGHTS : Artists retain all copyrights to submitted images and represented artwork. By entering the exhibition, artists selected to exhibit grant Free Street Theater rights to use the selected image(s) on printed materials, social media, and websites for promotional purposes only. Free Street Theater retains no copyrights to artist works.

DISCLAIMER : The final exhibit will exist as wheat pasted images on primarily abandoned sites + viaducts throughout the target neighborhoods, therefore subjected to the deterioration of elements, and the interaction of community members.
