She Safe, We Safe Installation

More than 30% of people reported missing in Chicago are Black women. Despite comprising only 2% of the city population, Black girls ages 10-20 in particular make up nearly one-third of all missing person cases in our city.

Building upon the Black Youth Project 100 (BYP100) She Safe, We Safe Report, and the Invisible Institute and City Bureau's "Missing in Chicago" 7-part investigation, this Installation seeks to highlight the systemic neglect, and simultaneous criminalization of Black women and girls in Chicago.

The She Safe, We Safe Installation calls attention to Black women and girls who are survivors, missing, incarcerated, surveilled and abandoned  by the system. 50 Black artists will be selected to display their work at the Shine Bright Community Center during the same week of the Democratic National Convention, with the intent to bring this issue to the forefront.

At BYP100, we know that art is activism and can bring about radical, transformative change. We hope the SSWS Installation will spread awareness, and connect people across a network of interests to identify solutions to this problem.

We invite visual art to be displayed during August 19-24, 2024, with some space for performance art during the show as well.

NO fee for entry. Only 1 entry accepted per artist.

50 works of art will be accepted, with at least 15 for youth artists under the age of 18.

All selected exhibiting artists will receive an honorarium of $500.
