Call for Women Artists - Power Frauen: German Women Who Dared to Dream

he DANK Haus German American Cultural Center proudly announces an open call for artists to participate in an upcoming exhibition, "Power Frauen: German Women Who Dared to Dream" This exhibition, first curated at the German American Heritage Center & Museum in Davenport, Iowa (view a snippet of their exhibition here), will celebrate the remarkable achievements and enduring legacies of German, Austrian, and other women of German descent who have left an indelible mark on the world.

We invite local women artists of all ages to create an original work of art inspired by one of these influential "Power Frauen" profiled in the exhibition. Your chosen subject can be any notable German-speaking woman who has made a significant impact in fields such as art, science, politics, literature, music, or social activism. We have provided a list of women who are profiled in the exhibition, but if you have another figure who speaks to you, feel free to suggest them to us!

Exhibition Details:

  • Title: Power Frauen: German Women Who Dared to Dream
  • Venue: DANK Haus Treffpunkt Gallery
  • Eligibility: Open to Chicagoland women artists of all ages, German heritage is not a requirement
  • Mediums: All mediums are welcome (painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, digital art, etc.)

Submission Guidelines:

  1. Theme: Your artwork should be inspired by a German-speaking woman on the list provided. Inspired by someone not on this list? Let us know!
  2. Originality: All submissions must be original works created specifically for this exhibition.
  3. Sales: Artists may sell their work during the exhibition. The DANK Haus will not take any commission, allowing artists to retain 100% of their profits.
  4. Application Process:
  5. Deadline: All applications must be received by July 19, 2024. Your artwork must be delivered to the DANK Haus by July 26, 2024. Along with your original artwork, please provide a brief artist statement (100-200 words) explaining the inspiration behind your work and how it relates to the theme.
  6. Selection: Selected artists will be notified no later than July 2nd, 2024. While the DANK Haus will not be collecting commission on any artworks in this exhibition, there is a $25 fee to participate, due once selected artists have confirmed their participation.

Important Dates:

  • Application Deadline: July 19, 2024
    • Note - art does not need to be completed until delivered to the DANK Haus
  • Notification of Acceptance: July 2, 2024
  • Completed Artwork Delivered to DANK Haus: July 26, 2024
  • Exhibition Dates: August 2 - September 20, 2024
  • Opening Reception: August 9, 2024
