Chicago Public Art Group (CPAG) is a nonprofit organization committed to enhancing public space and public engagement in all of Chicago's neighborhoods through community-based art. CPAG has been awarded the Great Rivers grant from Chicago Community Trust to create a public art piece in the Dunning Read Conservation Area that will be part of the Northwest Portage Walking Museum. The Northwest Portage Walking Museum is a collaboration between the Dunning Read Conservation Area Partners (DRCAP), American Indian Center (AIC), and Portage Park Neighborhood Association (PPNA) that will weave an interpretive connection between the Chicago and Des Plaines Rivers that celebrates the natural and cultural living histories of local communities and Native American contributions through art, education, and recreation. Chicago Public Art Group is looking for an artist (or team) that will work with DRCAP, AIC, and PPNA to build the site. The artist will work closely with the American Indian Center’s Education Coordinator to work with teens to help research, design and build the public art piece. The artist will also need to be familiar with DRCA, the partners, the research held at DRCA and the surrounding community and be able to work with teens and other volunteers. The partners are open to a variety of art forms. A 3D sculptural art piece using natural materials is preferred, but the group is open to suggestions of a medium that matches the space and promotes the goals of the project. The budget would be $10,000 for the artist (or artist team) and $10,000 for materials, equipment and foundation if necessary. The design process will take place in late spring and fabrication over the summer with an installation date of late August 2019. To apply to be an artist for the project, please email a resume, portfolio of relevant work (or links to a website), and a cover letter stating why you are interested and qualified for the project to by April 15. Thank you!
