Call for Submissions: Awakened Voices Literary Magazine Issue 13

Submission Call

Awakened Voices seeks writers and artists for our upcoming issue!

About Awakenings

The mission of Awakenings is to make visible the artistic expression of survivors of sexual violence. Awakenings is home to a multi-media art gallery that features the artistic expressions of sexual abuse and rape survivors. We aim to help survivors find peace and healing in showcasing their stories of survival while challenging cultural taboos that prevent honest discussions of sexual violence. Take a look at www.awakeningsart.org for more information about Awakenings and what we are doing!

The Theme of This Issue Is “The Body Speaks”

The body is a physical, psychological, and metaphorical extension of self. How we see, experience, and feel about our bodies is shaped by the experiences that shape our lives.

We are looking to showcase work that explores how the body expresses itself and speaks about trauma, its consequences, and recovery. How does the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual body respond to trauma? How does sexual abuse trauma interact with body image, sexuality, identity dissociation or reclamation? What else does the body interact with after trauma?

Show us through fiction, creative nonfiction, comics, visual art, or poetry (or a mix of genres!).

We tend to lean in for works that include reflecting, reclaiming, reimagining, or in some way processing and/or coping with trauma. In other words, we tend to lean away from pieces that simply place the reader in the immediacy of violence or danger.

We acknowledge healing looks different for everyone. A piece does not need to be hopeful or uplifting. We do ask you to revise with the audience in mind before submitting so it has the best impact for a world we wish to continue engaging with as fellow survivors, allies, and advocates.
