In 2012, Chicago Artists Coalition (CAC) launched the pilot program Midwest Artist Exchange between CAC’s BOLT Residency and Detroit’s Power House Productions.

In Detroit, events included tours of architectural sites such as Michigan Central Station and the Guardian Building, Detroit Institute of the Arts, The Alley Project, Signal Return Print Shop, CAVE Gallery, Public Pool and Popps Packing.

In Chicago, events included lunch and conversation with Tricia Van Eck at  6018North, a tour of Dorchester Projects with Theaster Gates, a tour of the Smart Museum’s exhibition Feast with Stephanie Smith, as well as meetings with Lora Lode at Mess Hall, Lauren Basing at threewalls, Jeremiah Hulsebos-Spofford at Southside Hub of Production (SHoP) and Allison Peters Quinn at Hyde Park Art Center.

The EXCHANGE Exhibition

The pilot proved to be incredibly successful.  The participants in the inaugural Chicago/Detroit tours gained so much from this experience that the idea emerged to produce culminating exhibitions that would provide the added benefit of broadening artists’ exposure to new audiences. In January and February 2013, CAC and the Detroit-based Powerhouse Productions produced two exhibitions.  Exchange< >Detroit took place at CAC and showcased work by eleven Detroit-based artists: Taurus Burns, Design 99, Jessica Frelinghuysen, Scott Hocking, Chido Johnson, Nicola Kuperus, Faina Lerman, Adam Lee Miller, Clinton Snyder, Vince Troia and Graem Whyte. Exchange< >Chicago took place in two concurrent Detroit galleries (CAVE and Public Pool) and showcased work by the 2011-12 BOLT Residents: Melika Bass, Sarah Belknap and Joseph Belknap, Gwynne Johnson, Jenny Kendler, Homa Shojaie, Kathryn Trumbull Fimreite, Eric Wall and Stacia Yeapanis. The exhibitions received wide promotion and critical reviews. Many of the artists continue to stay in touch and are discussing possible collaborations. As an added result, BOLT Resident Stacia Yeapanis received a solo show at Klemm Gallery in Adrian, Michigan.
