About Jose
Over the years Jose Aleman has been interested in mythology and its origins, popular culture, sociology, psychology, religious and spiritual ideas, history: in short, quite a lot that has to do with the human experience. Painting and making objects helps him understand the world which we inhabit. Jose strives to make work in which people can recognize themselves, reflect upon, and which allows us to see humanity from diverse vantage points.
In the past two decades Aleman has also participated in numerous exhibitions, including the Lima Biennales of 1998 and 2000, and most recently in 2006 at the Museum of the Casona Cultural at the University of San Marcos in Lima. He has also taught courses in architectural design and fine art at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, and been a member of art faculties at Harrington College of Design, DePaul University, and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
A native of Lima, Peru, he migrated with his family to the United States in 1971 and became a citizen in 1987. Living in Chicago since 1972, Jose graduated from the University of Illinois’ School of Architecture with a Bachelor of Architecture in Design in 1982. While working as an architect he continued his passion for the visual arts. In 1987 he attended Studio Arts Center International (SACI), and worked with SACI founder and painter Jules Maidoff in Florence. In 1991 he received a grant to attend the prestigious and competitive Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine; and in 1994 he graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Chicago.
